Kickoff to a Safe Season: Parent’s Guide to Athletic Prep

As student-athletes gear up for the fall sports season, parents and coaches play a key role in helping them stay safe, healthy, and ready to perform. At Carrollton Regional Medical Center, we’re committed to supporting young athletes on and off the field. Whether they’re playing football, volleyball, cross country, or any other sport, preparation is critical for preventing injuries and ensuring a successful season.

1. Schedule a Sports Physical
Before any athlete takes the field, a sports physical is essential. This exam helps identify any underlying health issues that could pose a risk during strenuous activity. It typically includes a review of medical history, heart and lung function, joint flexibility, and overall fitness. CRMC offers convenient physical exams to help families meet school requirements and ensure each athlete is fit to play.

2. Emphasize Proper Hydration and Nutrition
Texas heat is no joke – especially during two-a-days and early-season practices. Make sure your student is drinking plenty of water throughout the day and fueling their body with balanced meals that include protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs. Avoid energy drinks, which can cause dehydration and irregular heart rhythms.

3. Focus on Injury Prevention
Encourage proper warm-ups, stretching, and strength training. Many common sports injuries – like sprains, strains, and overuse injuries – can be prevented by building muscle stability and improving flexibility. Make sure athletes wear the correct protective gear and speak up when something doesn’t feel right.

4. Know the Signs of Concussion and Heat Illness
Concussions and heat-related illnesses are serious and require immediate attention. If your athlete experiences dizziness, nausea, confusion, or extreme fatigue, seek medical care right away. CRMC’s emergency department is open 24/7 and trained to treat sports-related injuries quickly and thoroughly.

5. Prioritize Rest and Recovery
Busy schedules and competitive pressure can lead to burnout. Encourage your student to get enough sleep, take rest days seriously, and listen to their body. Mental wellness matters, too – talk openly about stress, performance pressure, and the importance of balance.

Preparing your student-athlete for the season is about more than gear and game time – it’s about building healthy habits that will keep them safe all year long. Carrollton Regional Medical Center is here to support your family with expert care, injury prevention, and resources for a strong, successful season.
